Who controls the weather?

Wow!! What a surprise!!
Since the AKP rose to power in Turkey, the country's Islamist media has freely disseminated venomous anti-American and antisemitic allegations, propaganda, and conspiracy theories. [1] This campaign has been led by Islamist Turkish dailies such as Vakit, Milli Gazete, and Yeni Safak (which is close to the AKP government and especially to Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan). These newspapers have published stories about the U.S.'s alleged use of chemical and low-grade nuclear weapons in Iraq and U.S. soldiers' alleged systematic rape of Iraqi girls, and have blamed the U.S. for the December 2004 tsunami in southeast Asia and for the August 1999 Istanbul earthquake.
Why is it always the USA's fault?
Now, how could a tsunami, an earthquake, a tornado, a flood, rain, snow...be the USA's fault. I don't get it! Is the USA a Weather God?
I like these questions.

As an American, I try never to control the weather, but you never know, maybe I messed up when I set the automatic sprinkler system.

There's a Turkish film currently playing at my local cinema - the Wolves of Iraq - in which the Americans are portrayed as harvesting organs for transplant off prisoners. Ho hum. Seems like a common thing in this part of the world - Anything bad happens anywhere you have two choices:
1) Blame the USA
2) Blame Israel
This makes life so much easier. I had a colleague who once worked in a small town in Tunisia and one day a giant sink hole opened up in the middle of the main street. The sewer had obviously not been well constructed and the roof had caved in. Well, I say obviously, but I guess I am being overly logical and 'Western'. The vast majority of the local populace were convinced that this was a combined CIA/Mossad plot to undermine them. It's an interesting view to take, as by doing so you elevate your small, insignificant town to the rank of a player in major world events while simultaneously exonerating careless workmen, corrupt officials and slack maintenance men of any responsibility for the disaster.

Anti-americanism serves a number of political functions. It's always the boys at the top who manipulate it, and sadly the US approach often serves to play into their hands. Personally I blame George Bush for making me late on the train this morning and for causing my shoes to get holes.

lehihamra already mentioned the new Turkish movie...film is such a powerful medium. I'm incredulous at its fiction, but people just eat this stuff up. Very bad.

lehihamra, i remember when the earthquake happened here years ago there was a conspiracy theory that it was caused by a US submarine setting bombs off in the sea of marmara! educated atheist turks even tried hard to convince me of its truth. its pathetic and makes me seethe and laugh at the same time.
and i agree 100% with your last summing up about it making them feel important and it exhonorates them from all responsibility! thats in fact what i usually say to people when they try to spout these theories at me.
however the papers the article mentions are not in the mainstream. i will ask some journalist friends of mine about this anyway....
and by the way that building in the photo is not in turkey.
leilouta, you are as always brilliant. ooh and i found robs picture btw- its linked now*

I don't know about tsunami, earthquakes, and floods, but I know for a fact that students in america have at one time or another prayed for snow days so they wouldn't have to take that test or turn in that important piece of homework. I prayed, I wished, and several of those times my wish came true. It must be the collective chi, ....or something.

Why are so many idiots that believe it? Thats the question.
And the answer is their education on racist documents such as the Protocols, their honour for (men and women who murder civilians at restaurants) "Martyr's". The answer is on the TV each Friday when you listen to the Immam preach death to the Jews, the vile dirty Jews who are the devil pretending to be human.

Lehihamra - well said again.
When things go wrong in the world it is either
a) blame it on the Americans
or, if any of you remember Kosovo
b) When will the Americans come and make it all better?
Yes, they are the World Policeman. But, damned if they do, damned if they don't.

You need to ascertain your statements. Do you understand Turkish? Unless you have read for yourself and translated the articles and statements you ALLEGE these newspapers make--best to not hype things up.

Hi Leila,
I really don't think the building in the picture is in Turkey. The script is clearly Farsi suggesting it's actually in Iran, not in Turkey. For the past 50ish years, the Turkish script looks more Latin than Arabic.
I do agree with your point of view that many in the Muslim/Arb World tend to blame it all on El Marikene and the West which usually works well to evade accountability. The problem is that this anti-Americanism is fed by exactly the same fragmented knowledge, rhetoric and mis-information that's feeding islamophobia in the West in general. This will continue as long as America maintains its "axis of evil" tagging and others regard it as the "great Satan". I lived in the US for some time and I really appreciated the nicety and openness of Americans, the problem is that the US Administration doesn't give the same impression when dealing with International politics.
It's certainly not always America's fault.. just sometimes :)

The Tax Return Crack-Up<3>
