I am watching an Arab video right now. I have no idea who the singer is but the name of the song is “Play” and the singer is wearing skimpy outfits and licking lollipops during the whole clip.
My husband was amused and said,” How do you guys have this and Bin Laden? It just blows my mind.”

    Same way we have Pat Robertson and Paris Hilton... I was hoping that Tunisia won the game today (I know you weren't watching, but still...)... stupid Spain... Have to be so good at everything... (they aren't really)

    sounds like one of Ruby's videos! she's so commercial and can't sing... so many of these girls can't sing and use sex to sell the video/song.

    Governments in the Arab world are corrputed and most of them want money above everything. Show Biz is BIG MONEY and that's why they allow such things. Plus Arab youth and countries with relaxed censorship like such videos and therefore the producers are only satsifying that demand and reaping big profits. I love Rubi by the way. She's da bomb. I hate female Arab singers making such stupid Westernized style songs. They willll all be wearing cowboy hats and tryina act all "whitey"... Please don't get me wrong I'm not trying to be racist here. I love my white brothers and sisters =) I just think that there should be some creativity and fusion like Roubi for example or Shakira. Fusion of cultures is very unique and I don't care how "skimpy" the videos will be. However the one you described seems very "substance-less" to me as it's only some weird Arab chick trying to be Britney Spears and sucking badly at it instead of just being herself or being creative and original.

    Sometimes, I just don't get music videos. Notice in the U.S., some male bands wear make up, while some female singers wear ties ( Old Avril). Can't figure it out?!

    Cheikha Rimmitti was better than most of the Arabic singers today back in the 50's without acting/dressing foolishly. Her name is an Algerian experession that means something to the effect of "give me more wine" and one of her biggest hits was about having sex as much as possible before getting married. But all her songs wern't like that. A lot Arabic music nowadays is just either about screwing or alludes to screwing or calling somebody habibi. I can't stand Rubi, I prefer, you know people that have talent ;) I dont know how I feel about the whole fusion thing, sometimes it feel really contrived and more about being exotic than flowing well. But if you want original you should listen to some Algerian rap, some of it is poop but some is exceptional I think. We have death metal now too. Look up T.O.X. some of it is quite funny.

    Arwen: Of course we watched our national team beat Spain for the first 70 minutes!! It was truly amazing!! :) I'm so proud of them. The defense was SUCH A WALL the Spaniards couldn't break through... (unlike Ukraine). Hopefully we'll beat Ukraine on Friday. Root for Tunisia everyone!!

    oh my GOD! Is that the song el3ab el3ab el3ab??? That song disturbs me SO MUCH. She lies in a bathtub FULL OF MILK while she sings that song and sucks on her lollipop. I want so badly to drown her in the milk. HATE HATE. Yuck.

    Oh GOD not that song!! Two summers ago when I was in Egypt that song was on TV (all 900 music channels) I was flipping through the Al Ahram once and saw the word "oral sex", naturally, that caught my attention. The guy was analyzing all the new songs and he said this one in particular was promoting oral sex (due to all the licking I suppose)...my favorite part is "howa e7na bene3sha2 ya 7abeebi wala e7na benel3ab kora?"…oy.

    We used to have a TV show called the Gong Show. It was a talent show, mostly very untalented people appeared on it. Once 2 girls came out in bikinis and ate popcicles on the stage and they won the talent show!

    i don't think i'm catching any direct allusions to screwing...amd here i thoughti was a native egyptian. the videos are usually suggestive though...but it's only on sattelite, which is like cable, so it's not forced on everyone.
